Novo mesto is number one host of Tour of Slovenia
Beginnings of the Tour of Slovenia go back to 1993. The race was organized in honor of the newly formed country, on the initiative of the Cycling club Novo mesto. Tradition – with the exceptions in 1997 and 2020 – lasts to this day and the 27th edition of the race.
142 stages took place so far in the 26 years long history of the race. Tour has visited most of the country, even the small villages of Slovenia. 66 places were a host to start of the finish of the race, Novo mesto 33-times, which puts it in the first place. Novo mesto is also home to Cycling club Adria Mobil, the organizer of the race, and one of biggest cycling centers in the region. The city hosted 5 starts and 28 finishes of the stages, which means they even hosted start and a finish on certain edition. The race finished in Novo mesto 23-times, which means that the race finished somewhere else only on three occasions: on Tolsti vrh in 1994, in Ljubljana in 1995 and 2012. Ljubljana is also a city that is on the second place of host cities, with 14 starts and 16 finishes of the stages. Third is Nova Gorica with 12 starts and 8 finishes.
Some stages had started or finished in very small villages. If we don't count mountain finishes, Tolsti vrh really stands out with 147 residents. Orehovica with 210 residents is not that much bigger either. Otočec with 683 and Dobrovnik 933 residents are also far away from typical host cities, but important thing is that the race was welcomed everywhere, and people showed great excitement and support!
Route of the 2021 edition will be reviled soon.
