Road Closures During the Tour of Slovenia
From 17 to 21 June, Slovenia will be breathing in the rhythm of cycling. With the start of the first stage, road closures will also begin along the entire route. Longer closures will be in place at the start and finish venues, while on most of the route the police will implement rolling road closures. Read below to find out where the closures will be and how long they will last.
The organizing committee’s top priority is the safety of everyone involved—race participants, fans, spectators, and anyone who may be temporarily caught up in the road closures. We work closely with the police and a large team of marshals who will ensure the race runs smoothly. We kindly ask for your cooperation as well!
How do road closures work?
Start/Finish Areas: Multi-hour full closure of the venue and surrounding area. Certain areas will also be reserved for team vehicles, media, and race staff.
Entire Route: A full rolling closure, which typically lasts 15–20 minutes.
Finish Laps: Closures will be longer and traffic disruption greater in these locations:
- Wednesday, 17 June – Rogaška Slatina: Cyclists will complete two finish laps before crossing the finish line. The race is expected to pass through town for approximately one hour, between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.*, with road closures beginning earlier.
- Thursday, 18 June – Ormož: The peloton will arrive in Ormož, after which the cyclists will climb to Jeruzalem and then return to Ormož. They are expected to pass through Ormož for the first time around 2:45 p.m., with the finish around 4:00 p.m. The finish area will be closed for several hours; elsewhere, rolling closures will be in effect.
- Friday, 19 June – Celje: From a traffic perspective, this is the most demanding location. Cyclists will arrive in Celje and head past the railway station toward Celjska koča (Celje Hut). After the climb, they will descend into the city center, crossing the finish line for the first time before completing another shorter circuit through downtown. First arrival in the city will be at approximately 1:45 p.m.*, the final lap in the city canter will take place at approximately 2:20 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.*. The finish area and surrounding streets will be closed for several hours, and traffic will be heavily affected throughout the route area within the city.
- Saturday, 20 June – Kranjska Gora & Vršič: The finish area in Kranjska Gora will be closed for an extended period, starting in the morning. Rolling closures will be implemented when the peloton first passes through (from Jesenice toward Italy) and again when it returns from Vršič. The road over Vršič Pass, from the barriers in Trenta to the barriers above Lake Jasna, will be closed continuously from 5:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In the morning, rolling closures are also expected from Kranjska Gora toward Rateče and on the return route from Predel toward Vršič due to the recreational event MyTour of Slovenia, and later again during the Tour of Slovenia race itself. Traffic over the pass is expected to reopen after 4:00 p.m.*, although brief additional closures may occur during venue cleanup. Vršič will remain accessible by bicycle or on foot, but visitors will need to leave the roadway when the race caravan approaches.
- Sunday, 21 June – Novo Mesto: Cyclists are expected in Novo Mesto around 2:30 p.m.*. They will then complete a circuit via Trška Gora before returning to the Main Square (Glavni trg). During this time the Main Square and surrounding area will be closed to all traffic and a longer rolling closure will be in effect on Trška Gora.
* Times are estimates based on the cyclists’ expected speed.
Important Notice for Visitors and Road Users
- Review the stage schedules and plan your journey in advance. Always check the latest version, as minor route changes may occur due to unforeseen circumstances.
- Follow the instructions of police officers on motorcycles, in vehicles, and at designated points along the route, as well as race marshals who will work together with the police to ensure safety and smooth race operations.
- The arrival of the race and the start of rolling closures will be clearly announced by police vehicles using lights and sirens. Additional police vehicles, race organizer vehicles, and team vehicles will follow.
- A full rolling road closure will be enforced. This means the police will close the road before the cyclists arrive and reopen it only after the last vehicle in the support caravan has passed. During this period: Driving any vehicle on the route is prohibited; Crossing the road, whether by vehicle or on foot, is prohibited; Closures on individual sections are expected to last up to 15–20 minutes, although they may be longer if the riders become spread out.
- Rolling closures will be longer on climbs because the race caravan becomes more stretched out. On Saturday, 20 June, Vršič will experience an especially long closure due to the MyTour recreational race.
- If you are watching the race with dogs or other pets, please keep them on a leash so they do not run onto the road.
If possible, take advantage of the road closures to cheer on the cyclists and support them in their fight for the best possible results in the race.
